About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Hamtramck, Michigan, Yemen Cafe Restaurant offers an authentic taste of Yemeni cuisine that promises to delight even the most discerning palate. Specializing in traditional Yemeni dishes, this hidden gem at 8740 Joseph Campau Ave serves up a culinary experience rich with bold spices, tender meats, and vibrant flavors that speak directly to the soul.

The menu is a treasure trove of Yemeni classics, each dish a testament to careful preparation and deep-rooted culinary traditions. Notable standouts include the Lamb Haneeth Without Rice, prized for its melt-in-your-mouth tenderness and fragrant spices that envelop every bite. Paired with their garlicky, creamy Garlic Sauce and complemented by a soothing cup of Yemeni Tea, this dish sets a high bar for authentic flavor.

For those seeking variety, the Beef Galaba and Chicken Ghallaba offer succulent choices, simmered to perfection and bursting with savory, spice-forward depth. The Lamb Soup warms the palate with its hearty richness, an inviting starter or comforting companion. Don't miss the playful textures and layers found in the Mutabbak—a delightful, flaky Yemeni pie—as well as fresh, crisp salads like the Yemen Cafe Salad, Fattoush, and Tabbouli, which provide refreshing balance to the robust mains.

The dining atmosphere at Yemen Cafe Restaurant contrasts the deep, intricate flavors of its cuisine with a casual, welcoming space where hospitality shines. Customers have noted the clean and unpretentious environment, allowing the food—prepared with unmistakable care—to take center stage. The attentive and polite staff add a thoughtful layer to the experience, enhancing each visit even if the kitchen lingers over the slow-cooked perfection.

Regular diners rave about the consistency of the culinary journey here. Annie Beaubien shares how a recent visit finally unlocked the magic for her after trying the Yemeni bread with honey butter paired with perfectly cooked lamb and shish tawook, describing the meal as “so tender and flavorful” it truly blew her away. Others, like Kazi Daulat Sarfaraz, consider Yemen Cafe one of the finest Yemeni dining destinations in the United States, especially praising the Lamb Haneeth and family-style platters—a testament to its regional authenticity.

Authenticity is key here, even if it means a bit of patience; Nadia Anjum appreciates the savory richness and delicate flavors that make the wait worthwhile, highlighting dishes like the creamy, nutty khatla dessert, a sweet finale reminiscent of peanut halwa. Vinod Khilnani notes the casual ambiance yet reminds visitors to plan ahead, as service may slow during busy hours and road construction around the location can pose a slight challenge.

In essence, Yemen Cafe Restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it’s an invitation to explore Yemeni culture through its deeply satisfying and soulful food. Whether you’re a dedicated foodie or a curious traveler, this spot offers a warm, richly textured celebration of flavors that beckon you back again and again.

I’ve been here several times and have never had a bad meal, but didn’t really get the hype until my last visit. Maybe I just wasn’t ordering the right stuff before, but my last visit I was blown away! We got the Yemeni bread with honey butter- I liked this much more than the plain Yemeni bread. We got the lamb haneeth and shish tawook entree and both were cooked perfectly, so tender and flavorful. The fries are double fried and so crispy. The Yemeni tea is addictive, you have to try it. I think their entrees as opposed to their sandwiches is where Yemen Cafe really shines, so I recommend sticking to that part of the menu.

Just go for food, don't judge food by the ambience. Worth the wait. Don't miss the Lamb over rice

Nice place for experiencing Yemeni cuisine. The food was extremely savory, flavourful and yammy, specially the beef gallaba. Also, had the khatla dessert. It's similar to peanut halwa, so creamy and nutty.. And the ambiance is nice and clean. The staff are very polite. Only complaint is that, the food took a long time to be prepared, but when it came it seemed worth the wait!

Authentic food with casual atmosphere. Service could get slow in busy hours. Getting to the location could be difficult due to ongoing construction on the street.

One of the best Yemeni food in the US. Worth it to visit Michigan and try the food. Must try their Lamb Haneeth and any lamb items. Love their Family Platter.

The food here is always consistent no matter the day of the year. Fairly priced per person and they are not stingy about their portions. I would recommend this to anyone who looking for a warm and hearty Yemeni meal.

The appetizers were on point, each dish full of flavor and authenticity. The bread, however, truly stood out — perfectly baked, soft, and fresh, with that signature Yemeni touch that brings the whole meal together. You can tell the quality and care in every detail. Yemeni Café continues to set the standard for genuine hospitality and taste.
